Weighing in at 1.5 kilograms, and the home to over 100 billion neurons (the same number of stars in the Milky Way), the brain is one of the most complex and critical parts of our body. What we think, our speech, our movement, and how we respond to situations are all controlled by our brain.
When a person suffers a brain injury, whether it be from birth or later life, the functions of the brain can be changed, and you might need to relearn skills or find different ways to do things.
If you or a loved one has suffered a brain injury, neurological physiotherapy can play an important role in rehabilitation and supporting long-term management.
Our Valens Care team is here to help. We have NDIS-registered physiotherapists who are committed to supporting you at whatever stage of your injury to understand your goals and support you in your rehabilitation.
What is physiotherapy for brain injury?
Physiotherapy is a personalised service, with every treatment plan tailored to your individual needs. What you want to achieve could be different to that of another person with a brain injury. This is why it’s important to find a physiotherapist who understands your injury and is committed to supporting you in your physical and neurological rehabilitation.

Physiotherapy for brain injury, or neurological physiotherapy, is an essential part of rehabilitation. It can support your movement, balance, and strength, and may have a positive impact on quality of life.
Neurological physiotherapy can be simple exercises like stretches to regain strength or involve more intensive exercises like walking and running.
What does physiotherapy for brain injury help with?
At Valens Care, we have supported people with brain injuries to manage a number of difficulties including:
- Difficulty walking and moving
- Fatigue
- Weakness in limbs
- Impaired balance or coordination
- Pain
- Tremors
- Difficulty using arms and hands for everyday activities
- Decreased endurance.
What does physiotherapy for brain injury help with?
Muscle re-education
Almost like school for your body. Teaching your muscles new movements which can help you go about your daily life.
Strength training
Resistance and strength training can help improve your muscle tone and increase your aerobic capacity. It could also improve your independence. The stronger you are, the more you can often do.
Balance training
A series of tailored exercises which aim to improve your balance and coordination. This may help improve your posture, reduce falls, and strengthen key areas of your body.
Independence at home
Keeping you as independent as possible with tasks like getting dressed, brushing your teeth, or moving around your home.
Improved mobility
Practice movements which help to regain physical function, and free up tension in your muscles. This can help to improve your mobility to decrease the likelihood of further injury and increase your flexibility and range of movement.
Support mental health
Physical activity may help to reduce anxiety and depression, boost your mood and support your mental wellbeing.
Improve cognitive function
Research has shown physiotherapy can improve your cognitive function and help with concentration and reduce confusion, distraction and frustration.
How does a brain injury physiotherapy session work?
- We want to get to know you. We’ll start by asking you about your injury and your daily activities to better understand where you are facing challenges. And while we’ll want to know about your medical history, we also want to know about your goals – what you want to achieve and where you’d like to make changes.
- Let’s set some goals together. We’ll create a tailored plan for your needs, which will address any potential barriers, but also identify areas we can focus on together.
- We roll out the treatment plan. This will almost always involve some targeted exercises (which we’ll teach you how to do), as well as manual therapy (focus on the muscles). We can also provide advice on assistive aids and devices you may benefit from using.
It doesn’t stop there. We will continue to work with you throughout your journey and we’ll adjust your treatment plan along the way.
